The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (±DX) The New Dungeon Code sent in by Hugo Janacek I know many of the Zelda community have been bombarded with incredible claims for miraculous codes for this game over the past few years which were known by most of you, or were exposed as frauds, so I thought that it might be time for a break. A year or so ago I stumbled upon an incredible code for Link's Awakening which I christened the 'New Dungeon' code. This code was incredibly unpredictable, and created havoc with many of my game cartridges, on purpose. You see, with the New Dungeon code, I have begun to find access into the inner workings of the game. The essense of the code is that, if you enter the top of any door in the game, or any well or staircase that is not connected to anywhere in the game, you will be placed in a copy of Artemis's Rooster's Grave, with all the dungeon screens from all the levels in the game placed together in a linear order. This dungeon will have randomly generated graphics merged from others in the game, and radomly generated music likewise. More interestingly, it contained chests in the game that gave out text that was previously not available. For instance: 'You've got a shovel. Now you can feel the joys of digging.' 'But, unfortunately, it is empty.' 'Good Job! Use it on your enemies and see what happens. If you run out, go to the forest, pick some mushrooms and I will make you more.' At any rate, when you would save in this dungeon, some strange effects would be bestowed on your game file when you save in the dungeon itself, in a manner I have not yet been able to determine. I have, for instance, managed to gain all the items as shown below: My file was renamed as 'Anya' I had allegedly stolen from the shop I was bestowed the magnifying glass I had saved, standing in the middle of Marin's house I had infinte potions from Crazy Tracy I had all the Ocarina songs I had two extra, scrambled, unusable items I had 61 arrows I had five extra hearts (I can't really complain!) I had Marin, without beating level 2 And so on. Anyway, this intruiged me, and I spent a little while working out how the random combinations worked. It seemed that the number of enemies you killed, and the door you entered, determined what the dungeon would look like, what characteristics tiles were bestowed with and whether chests could be opened, as well as what text would come out of them. At one point, I even managed to find a chest that contained 999 rupees (with a different text, but it was certainly worthwhile!). However, I still had not worked out how all of the effects in the list above were formed, and I told myself that after a year I would publish my findings. The method on the original game went like this: 1. Kill a certain number of enemies. How many enemies you kill determines what characteristics tiles will have in the dungeon. 2. Place youself on the screen where level 6 would be, and warp down one screen. 3. Enter the top of the Southern Shrine's doorway, 4. Move upwards, swinging your sword, and left, swinging your sword. 5. Enjoy the Dungeon, and happy hunting! Last month, however, I found a technique that still allows DX owners to access the Dungeon using the 'Link Offset' Code. The directions above changed slightly, but it means that all of you who have only DX and cannot warp can finally experiance this dungeon for yourselves! Indeed, this method is in fact easier, and far more elegant than the method shown above. Try the list below and see where it takes you: 1. Kill a certain number of enemies. How many enemies you kill determines what characteristics tiles will have in the dungeon. 2. Place yourself on the screen that contains the entrance Madam Meow's house, and stand above the roof of the kennel. 3. Stand, touching the roof of the kennel, so that half of Link touches the kennel, and the other half is in open air, facing downwards. When you walk down, Link should be pushed to the right. This is the 'Link Offset' code. 4. Hold the down key and then hold down the left key. If you have done this correctly, you will hear the sound of a door entry, and you will enter the dungeon. 5. Move upwards, swinging your sword, and left, swinging your sword. 6. Enjoy the Dungeon, and happy hunting! To save you a little time, I will post the result of my month of research into the DX engine in the appendix of this code, which is helpfully different to the original engine to defy my previous work. I would recommend that you kill exactly 14 enemies on the original game and three on the DX engine to make your dungeon experience worthwhile. Otherwise, good luck with this! As you can see, these figures are a lot nicer than the previous ones, with almost all the renditions allowing full view of the Dungeon, and chests being openable in every case. Almost each rendition has it's own flavour, with the Level-2 Sword rendition of number 8 or the equipment of number 6, but I would recommend killing 3 enemies before entering this dungeon in the DX version for the sake of diversity. Good Luck!
